The Ranch

Raised where the work is

Slickhorn Ranch runs cattle in the high country around Soda Springs. Our border collies aren't a side project. They gather pairs off big country, sort in the alley, and load trailers every week of the year.

We breed for the dog we want beside us: power and sense on cattle, a stop when it counts, and a gentle partner once the work is done. Every dog in our program earns its place on our own stock before it's ever bred.

Gentle at the house. Fierce at the head of a cow.

At home Yogi is about as kind and gentle as a dog gets, a true companion who would rather be at your side than anywhere else. Put him on cows and you meet a different dog. He goes straight to the head, meets cattle face to face, and doesn't give an inch when one wants to fight. He reads a cow before she moves, uses only the pressure the job needs, and works with grit through brush, heat and long days.

Birdie's outrun is the first thing people talk about: wide, deep and sure, coming in behind her cattle right where she should be. She works great on her own and needs very little from the handler, so you can send her over the hill and trust the cattle are coming back. She's intelligent, determined, and still trying at the end of the longest day.
